Air Fryer Sausage and Potatoes

Air Fryer Sausage and Potatoes is a hot and hearty all-in-one dinner recipe that comes together in no time! Baby potatoes, peppers, onions, and sweet Italian chicken sausage are a mouthwatering combo!

An Easy Air Fryer Dinner Idea

If you love making one-pot meals, then this flavor-blasted recipe for air fryer sausage and potatoes is for you! It’s a crispy, hearty, satisfying dinner that cooks up quickly and easily in the air fryer. Perfect for a busy weeknight, this is a family-pleasing dish that even picky eaters will enjoy.

I especially like how quick this is to make as the weather warms up, because the faster the recipe, the less I have to heat up my kitchen! Dinner can be on the table in about 20 minutes, and it’s a hot, filling meal. When you add that there’s hardly any prep, you know this one’s going on the menu!

What You’ll Need

Let’s take a look at the list of ingredients for this one-dish dinner! You’ll find plenty of color, texture, and flavor here! But keep in mind that the ingredients are also very customizable. You can substitute veggies and sausage to your taste.

  • Potatoes: I used baby potatoes, cut into about 6 wedges, but you could use whatever potatoes you like. Just scrub, pat dry, and cut into small pieces.
  • Onion: Cut up one yellow onion (or any color onion) into 6 wedges.
  • Bell Pepper: Thinly slice one bell pepper.
  • Olive Oil: For coating the veggies.
  • Seasoned Salt: Use your favorite seasoned salt to add a punch of flavor.
  • Black Pepper: Freshly ground black pepper tastes wonderful on fresh potatoes and smoked sausage!
  • Italian Seasoning: You could also use Greek seasoning.
  • Garlic Powder: This adds an intense, savory taste.
  • Chicken or Turkey Sausage: You’ll need fully cooked sweet Italian chicken or turkey sausage, cut into 1-inch pieces. If you prefer, substitute another fully-cooked sausage in this recipe, like pork or beef.

Can You Put Raw Sausages in an Air Fryer?

It is definitely possible to cook raw sausages like bratwurst or breakfast sausage in the air fryer, but it takes longer and the sausages would probably be best air-fried by themselves, instead of mixed in with the other ingredients. That’s why I like to use smoked chicken sausage in this recipe: it’s fully cooked, and only needs to be heated up and crisped on the outside.

How to Make Air Fryer Sausage and Potatoes

Making this dish is a breeze – all you have to do is prep your sausage and veggies, and then give everything a quick air fry! The simple but zesty seasoning blend adds loads of flavor. This one is a winner!

  1. Prep the Air Fryer and Veggies. To begin, make sure to preheat the air fryer to 400˚F. Next, combine the cut potatoes, onions, and peppers in a large zip-top bag. Pour in the oil, and season the mixture with seasoned salt, pepper, Italian seasoning, and garlic powder. Close the bag and shake/massage to coat.
  2. Air Fry the Veggies. Spray the basket of the air fryer with your preferred (non-aerosol) cooking spray. Dump the veggies into the basket, and air-fry for 15 minutes, shaking the basket about halfway through cooking.
  3. Add the Sausage and Finish Cooking. When the 15 minutes are up, add the sausage to the air fryer basket, and cook for 5 more minutes.
  4. Enjoy! Transfer the air fryer sausage and potatoes to a serving dish, garnish with parsley, and serve hot.

Do You Need to Boil Potatoes Before Putting Them in an Air Fryer?

While some recipes recommend par-boiling (partially boiling) the potatoes before you air-fry, I have had great results just putting them into the air fryer without boiling. I do, however, cut them small so that they will cook through completely. But, if you’d rather par-boil, that’s totally fine, too. You may not need to air-fry them quite as long if you boil them first.

My Top Tips for Successful Air Frying

If you love cooking in your air fryer like I do, then you will definitely love this easy dinner idea! Air fryer sausage and potatoes is a flavorful meal that’s so simple, and so comforting. These helpful tips will make sure it turns out a success, every time!

  • Preheat Your Air Fryer: To get the crispiest results, I recommend letting your air fryer preheat before you cook. If it doesn’t have a preheat setting, just let it come to temperature for a few minutes before you start cooking.
  • Avoid Aerosol: In general, avoid using aerosol nonstick spray in the air fryer – the chemicals in the spray can damage the fryer basket over time. Instead, opt for regular cooking oil in a spritz bottle, or simply rub a thin layer of oil onto the basket with a paper towel.
  • Shake the Basket: Remember to shake the basket from time to time during the cooking process, for even cooking and the best results.
